FIRST in Creating Opportunities for our Communities

As a native New Mexican who has chosen to live and work here, Powell knows that we are facing significant challenges to provide economic opportunities for our people while protecting the health of our land. It matters how the work gets done to meet these challenges. Powell's efforts reflect a concentrated effort to develop public-private partnerships, find innovative solutions to problems, and create opportunities for all New Mexicans.

During Powell's term as land commissioner, he established the Community Partnership Program at the State Land Office to work with the more than 100 New Mexico municipalities and 32 counties that have trust land near or within their boundaries. About 50,000 acres of trust land, or about one-half of one percent of all trust lands, were identified as having potential for accommodating the needs of nearby communities.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING TIERRA MADRE

By working with private business, local, state and federal agencies, non-profits, and individuals, Powell's team created good new jobs, business parks, affordable housing, master planned communities, recreational facilities, nature preserves and teen recreation centers throughout New Mexico. Powell's team gets the job done. This is just the beginning of what Powell's team can and will accomplish upon their return to the land office.
