Efforts on Behalf of Other Species


Ray Powell is a veterinarian who has initiated and supported numerous efforts to protect animals. These include:
  • Spearheaded legislative initiatives, working to increase penalties for animal cruelty.
  • Supported legislation to ban animal fighting, to improve animal shelter standards and operations.
  • Supported ban on private possession of wolves and wolf-dog hybrids.
  • Education effort to inform New Mexicans on the link between animal cruelty and domestic violence.
  • Prohibited the Federal Animal Services/Animal Damage Control from killing predators on state trust lands in 26.
  • Prohibited the killing or removal of rattlesnakes from state trust land during the Annual Rattlesnake Roundup in Alamogordo.
  • Protected habitat for Lesser Prairie-Chicken by partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and grazing lessees.
  • Protected habit for endangered plants-Pecos Sun Flower--on Trust lands by working with other agencies and lessees.
  • 2000 Milagro Award for Humane Education awarded by Animal Protection of New Mexico.
  • Animal Protection Voters endorsement, Ray Powell for Land Commissioner in 2006
